Orquesta Tumbao ~ July 26
Orquesta Tumbao was formed in 2011 to bring together some of the tremendous Latin Jazz performers on the faculty of the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. This all-star ensemble is dedicated to promoting Latin jazz, educating the public about the rich traditions and cultural origins of the music, and delivering high energy performances of classics from the repertoire. Orquesta Tumbao presents public performances, educational concerts and Latin jazz residencies to public schools through the WCM Jazz Institute, which is made possible by the generous support of the Eric D. Batterman Memorial Grant.
In spring 2012 Orquesta was in residence at Bruce Guadalupe Middle School where they presented numerous rhythm section workshops and master classes, an 8-week course in improvisation, and an educational concert. They also performed “This is Latin Jazz!” as part of the Conservatory’s Lincoln Center for the Arts Concert series. During the 2012 - 2013 school year the Orquesta will be in residence at the Milwaukee High School for the Arts. For information about bringing a Jazz, Latin Jazz, or World Drumming residency to your school contact the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music at 414/276-5760.
