July 18 ~ Tweed Funk (Milwaukee, WI)
Formed 2+ years ago, Tweed Funk has garnered national and international acclaim for their horn-driven, sweat-soaked, soul-blues. This Milwaukee, Wisconsin band is fronted by Joseph “Smokey” Holman, who recorded under Curtis Mayfield in the early 70’s. Tweed Funk’s two CD releases and performances at blues festivals and top blues-rooms have earned the band praise from press and media around the world.
“Performing a muscular blend of blues and funk that evokes groups like the Kinsey Report, the Bone Shakers, Funkadelic, Living Colour, and early Red Hot Chili Peppers, this Milwaukee quartet knows how to lock into a groove with equal parts fury and finesse.”- Blues Revue Magazine
Tweed Funk has been in the regular rotation at the House of Blues in Chicago and earned some excellent spots at Blues Festivals including: opening for Shemekia Copeland at the Prairie Dog Blues Festival in 2012; opening for the headliner at the Blues on the Chippewa Festival in 2012; opening for Buddy Guy at Purdue University; appearing at the Paramount Blues Festival, Waukesha Blues Festival, Summerfest, UW Madison Funk Festival, 2012 International Blues Challenge, and many other concert events.
“The quartet's sophomore outing (7 originals, 3 covers), buttressed by some code-red horns (mainly Jon Lovas and Kevin Klemme), dynamite organist Jimmy Voegeli and guitarist Greg Koch, proves most thrilling on numbers like the salutary shuffle 'Fine Wine', a rhythmic call-out called 'Dancemaker' (that Sam and Dave would have fun with), a Jimmy Reed styled, bluesy advisory titled 'Pick Em Early' (nice gritty guitar courtesy of Optekar) and the appropriately titled 'Fragile'.”– Big City Rhythm and Blues Magazine
Tweed Funk’s latest CD, Love Is, has charted nationally and been played on 160+ stations around the world and the band has had reviews in major print and internet publications including: Blues Revue Magazine, Vintage Guitar Magazine, Big City Rhythm & Blues Magazine, IconFetch, The Blues Blast Magazine, and many others.
